My Work in the Legislature

denise baum legislative headshot

The 2023 Legislative session was my first term in an elected position as a Representative for House District 47 in the Montana Legislature. It was an extremely busy and demanding session, but my 31+ years in law enforcement prepared me well for its many challenges.

LEGislation

HB362

Sponsored & Passed

Expanded Crisis Intervention team training

HB362 provides training to law enforcement and first responders as to how to safely de-escalate persons experiencing a mental health crisis and refer them to services versus incarcerating them.  This solution supports both citizens and law enforcement. I will continue to address public safety needs to ensure that law enforcement has the necessary training, tools and equipment to effectively perform their job and keep our communities safe.

HB301

Sponsored,
Passed in House,
Stalled out in Senate

Penality enhancement for those in possession of a firearm while committing felony drug trafficking OFFENSES

HB 301 would revise laws relating to dangerous drugs. It targets armed drug dealers and provides for a penalty enhancement if in possession of a firearm while selling/distributing dangerous drugs. Drug dealers are arming themselves to protect their drug assets and settle drug disputes, resulting in a rise in gun violence and impacting our community’s safety.
